Kingsway College School
Etobicoke, Canada

“Learning occurs everywhere and not only in the classroom.”

With this philosophy in mind, a major addition to Kingsway College School, a private elementary school, was designed. Built alongside an existing 1950’s school, the 3 storey, 12 classroom addition forms the north wall of a new 10 metre high atrium space featuring a full height ‘living wall’ for natural air filtration and humidification. The project was designed as a sustainable building with a superb building envelope, high efficiency mechanical system with a state of the art heat-recovery system, automated lighting controls, and dual-flush toilets. More than a sustainable building however, the project was designed as an education tool in and of itself. The project highlights its green features – such as storm water retention, visible planted roofs and solar shading – as visible demonstrations of healthy and sustainable building practices at work.
